Summiting Mt. Shasta

Last weekend, my friend Paul, most of his family, and myself went on a trek to climb Mt. Shasta. After living in Redding and seeing the mountain every day for about 16 years, I’ve been itching to climb it – and jumped at the chance!

The Summit of Mt. ShastaThe chance finally came, and we wound up making the trip. I have plenty of stories to share – too much to write right now, but in the meantime check out my flickr set of the trip. All I can say is that it was very very cold! The route up was under 20 degrees Fahrenheit, before you calculate the wind chill of the 35-40mph wind! That’s cold!

We departed at 3am for the climb starting from our camp at Helen Lake (about 10,000 ft.) and summited around 8:30am. Ice axes and crampons and Clif bars, oh my!

You know, I’m kind of annoyed that I lived at the base of this thing for 18 years yet you’ve managed to climb it and I haven’t. It’s kinda like the annoyance I got after talking to you about going to England, then finding out you’d actually been to like 30 different countries, then you backpacking all across Europe for 2 months. In short, stop one-upping me you asshat >.
